The interrelationship between variances
Variances rarely happen in isolation. A decision that causes one variance to be favourable often causes a related variance to be adverse at the same time.
Real World
Ryanair saves money by buying cheaper jet fuel in bulk (favourable price variance), but the lower-grade fuel burns faster on certain routes, increasing litres used per flight (adverse usage variance).
Exam Focus
When asked to 'discuss' variances, always explain the trade-off — state which variance improves and which worsens from the same decision.
