Prepare statements of financial position with subheadings: non-current assets, current assets, capital (equity), non-current liabilities, current liabilities
A statement of financial position lists everything a business owns and owes at one point in time. It groups items under five standard headings so readers can quickly assess the business's financial health.
Formula
Net Book Value = Cost − Accumulated Depreciation | Net Assets = Total Assets − Total Liabilities | Capital = Opening Capital + Profit − Drawings
Real World
Tesla's statement of financial position lists gigafactories and machinery as non-current assets, cash and receivables as current assets, and long-term bonds as non-current liabilities, giving investors a snapshot of its financial position on one specific date.
Exam Focus
Always show accumulated depreciation as a deduction under non-current assets, not as a liability — misplacing it is one of the most penalised errors.
